Vietnam's Fields Medalist Establishes Major Scholarship Programme for Maths Students

Professor Ngo Bao Chau has unveiled an ambitious scholarship scheme designed to nurture mathematical talent across Vietnam, personally selecting nine recipients for the nation's most substantial mathematics awards. Each scholar will receive full tuition support alongside a monthly living stipend of VND15 million, equivalent to approximately US$579, providing recipients with the financial stability to focus on their studies without economic constraints.

The initiative reflects Ngo Bao Chau's commitment to developing the next generation of Asian mathematicians and strengthening Vietnam's position in the global scientific community. As the country's only Fields Medalist—widely regarded as the highest honour in mathematics—Ngo Bao Chau brings considerable prestige and expertise to the scholarship selection process.

The programme represents a significant investment in mathematics education within Vietnam, addressing gaps in funding for promising students pursuing advanced studies in the discipline. By removing financial barriers, the scholarships aim to enable exceptional young mathematicians to pursue their academic ambitions and potentially contribute to groundbreaking research at the regional and international level.

The scholarship initiative underscores growing recognition among Vietnam's academic elite of the importance of supporting mathematical sciences, a field increasingly central to technological development and economic competitiveness across Asia.
