Dr. Nguyen Thi Lan Anh was formally inaugurated at the tribunal's headquarters in Hamburg, Germany, on Thursday, marking a significant milestone for Vietnamese representation in international maritime law. She was among five judges sworn in during the ceremony, joining counterparts elected from Ghana, Brazil, Tunisia and India.
The International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea, established under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, serves as the primary judicial body for resolving disputes related to maritime law and ocean governance. The tribunal's 21-member bench comprises judges nominated by signatory states and elected by secret ballot.
Dr. Nguyen's appointment reflects Vietnam's growing engagement with international maritime institutions at a time when Southeast Asia faces increasing challenges related to ocean resource management and maritime disputes. Her presence on the tribunal enhances the region's voice in shaping global maritime jurisprudence.
The newly sworn judges will contribute to the tribunal's deliberations on cases involving territorial waters, maritime boundaries, environmental protection and the exploitation of ocean resources. Their terms will extend the tribunal's capacity to address the expanding range of maritime legal questions facing the international community.
