Vietnam's reference exchange rate declines as trading band widens

The State Bank of Vietnam set the reference exchange rate lower on October 22, continuing a pattern of fluctuation observed throughout late October. Under the current trading band of ±5%, commercial banks face a ceiling rate of 26,914 VND/USD and a floor rate of 24,350 VND/USD when conducting dollar transactions.

The movement reflects broader currency market dynamics in Vietnam, where the dong has experienced mixed trading conditions in recent weeks. The reference rate had climbed 6 VND on October 20, before retreating 5 VND the following day, demonstrating the volatility typical of emerging market currencies responding to regional and global economic factors.

The widened trading band of ±5% allows commercial banks greater flexibility in setting their own exchange rates within the central bank-established parameters, though transactions must remain within these guardrails. This structure aims to balance currency stability with market-driven pricing mechanisms.

Market participants continue monitoring the reference rate's trajectory as it serves as a key benchmark for foreign exchange transactions across Vietnam's financial system. The rate's direction remains sensitive to international monetary conditions and regional economic developments.
