Vietnam's Deputy Prime Minister Pham Gia Tuc said on Wednesday that negotiations covering a comprehensive trade agreement between Hanoi and Washington have advanced substantially, with the two sides nearing completion of discussions.
Speaking at an event in Hanoi, Pham indicated that the proposed trade deal was in its final stages, representing a significant step in deepening economic ties between the two nations.
However, US officials present at the discussions appeared to take a more restrained view of the negotiations' status. While not contradicting Vietnamese claims outright, American representatives offered less definitive statements about the timeline for concluding the trade agreement.
The divergence in messaging reflects a common pattern in trade negotiations, where countries may have different strategic reasons for characterising progress publicly. Vietnam, seeking to demonstrate economic momentum to investors and its population, has incentive to highlight advanced negotiations, while the US typically maintains cautious public positions until deals are formally concluded.
The proposed trade agreement would mark a significant development in Vietnam-US relations and could reshape regional trade dynamics in Southeast Asia.
