Vietnam seeks fresh momentum for Mekong subregional cooperation

Vietnam is intensifying efforts to revitalize cooperation across the Mekong subregion, with senior officials pledging to strengthen partnerships that unlock new growth opportunities for member states. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Hang has signaled Hanoi's commitment to working alongside fellow Mekong nations and the ASEAN Secretariat to broaden participation from international development partners and attract greater private sector investment in the region.

The initiative reflects Vietnam's broader push to position the Mekong subregion as an economic driver within Southeast Asia. By coordinating with development partners and engaging the business community, Vietnam aims to create conditions for accelerated growth across multiple sectors and countries in the Mekong corridor.

Vietnam has proposed three strategic priorities to advance cooperation with South Korea, signaling expanding linkages beyond the traditional Mekong framework. Simultaneously, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam—the CLMV grouping—are setting ambitious targets to double international tourist arrivals, a sign of broader economic ambitions across the subregion.

The regional push for closer ties extends to ASEAN's partnerships with external stakeholders. Japan and ASEAN are advancing cooperation through future-oriented initiatives, indicating that Mekong subregional development increasingly intersects with broader Asian economic integration efforts.
