Vietnam struggles to absorb wave of US deportations

Deportations of Vietnamese nationals from the United States have surged in recent years, creating a humanitarian crisis for returnees who have spent much of their lives in America. Many deportees arrive in Vietnam as adults with minimal ties to their homeland, having emigrated as children or young people and spent 20, 30 or more years in the US. Upon return, these individuals confront an unfamiliar language, fractured family networks and economic hardship that complicates their reintegration into Vietnamese society.

The returnees often lack basic Vietnamese language proficiency and struggle to navigate local bureaucracies, job markets and social structures that have evolved significantly since their departure. Many arrive with no savings or assets and face discrimination as foreign returnees, despite their ethnic Vietnamese heritage. Employment opportunities remain limited for those unable to communicate fluently or lacking credentials recognized in Vietnam's economy.

Family reunification has proven difficult for many deportees, as relatives dispersed across Vietnam or lost contact during their decades abroad. Social services and government support programmes remain inadequate to address the scale of the challenge. Vietnamese authorities have called for greater international cooperation and support mechanisms to assist deportees in their transition, while humanitarian organisations warn of deepening social vulnerability among this population.

The issue reflects broader tensions between US immigration enforcement policies and the practical realities facing individuals with deep roots in American society. Advocates argue that deportations of long-term residents who lack criminal records represent a failure of integration policy and humanitarian duty, while US officials maintain strict enforcement of immigration laws.
