Vietnam Targets Advanced Chip Manufacturing, Not Just Assembly

As global semiconductor supply chains undergo major restructuring, Vietnam is positioning itself to move beyond contract manufacturing into higher-value chip design and production. Industry analysts say the key to capturing greater market share lies in building domestic technological expertise alongside attracting foreign investment.

Vietnam's semiconductor ambitions are shifting from a labour-cost advantage to a knowledge-based strategy as multinational chipmakers diversify production away from traditional hubs. The country's capacity to absorb advanced manufacturing techniques and develop specialised expertise has become central to its economic strategy, with policymakers recognising that assembly work alone offers limited long-term growth.

The restructuring of global chip supply chains following recent geopolitical tensions and supply disruptions has created openings for Southeast Asian economies to upgrade their roles in semiconductor production. Vietnam's large, educated workforce and improving infrastructure have attracted major semiconductor companies, but experts warn that maintaining competitiveness requires deeper investment in research, development, and technical training.

Regional cooperation is emerging as a key strategy, with Vietnam and neighbouring countries establishing joint initiatives to develop semiconductor talent and share technical knowledge. These efforts aim to build a regional ecosystem capable of supporting not just manufacturing operations but also design centres and innovation hubs that can serve global markets.

Industry observers emphasise that Vietnam's window of opportunity depends on how quickly the country can transition from being a manufacturing destination to a centre of semiconductor expertise. The accumulation of management experience and technological know-how will determine whether Vietnam can retain high-value investments as global chipmakers continue to optimise their production networks.
