Vietnam targets top 40 global innovation ranking by 2030

Vietnam has outlined an aggressive innovation agenda designed to elevate the country's standing on the Global Innovation Index, with officials aiming for a place among the world's top 40 economies by 2030. The strategy represents a significant shift in how the nation approaches technological advancement and economic competitiveness in an increasingly knowledge-driven global marketplace.

Central to the plan is a commitment to increase overall investment in research and development to at least 2 percent of gross domestic product, with private entities expected to fund more than 60 percent of this spending. The strategy underscores Vietnam's recognition that sustained innovation requires diversified funding sources beyond government coffers. To support emerging technology sectors, the government is allocating up to 192,000 USD for each approved artificial intelligence innovation project, signaling particular emphasis on AI-driven solutions.

The innovation roadmap includes measurable benchmarks across multiple indicators of scientific progress. Vietnam aims to boost international scientific publications by an average of 10 percent annually while simultaneously increasing patent applications and granted patents by 16 to 18 percent yearly. These targets reflect a broader effort to translate research activity into commercially viable innovations and strengthen Vietnam's intellectual property portfolio.

Technology and innovation are already beginning to reshape key sectors, particularly healthcare, where advanced digital solutions are improving service quality and accessibility. Officials view this trajectory as evidence that sustained investment in science and technology can deliver tangible benefits across the economy while positioning Vietnam as a regional innovation hub.
