Vietnam targets tourism sector to drive 12% of GDP by 2030

Vietnam's leadership has adopted Resolution 26-NQ/TW, a comprehensive policy framework designed to elevate tourism's economic contribution to between 10 and 12 percent of gross domestic product by 2030. The initiative sets aggressive targets across multiple metrics, including 45 to 50 million international arrivals and 160 million domestic visitor trips annually, with projected total sector revenue of 80 to 90 billion USD.

The strategic push reflects Vietnam's growing prominence in the global tourism landscape. The country recently climbed seven positions in the World Travel and Tourism Council's tourism development index, signaling improving competitiveness in visitor experience and infrastructure. The recognition positions Vietnam alongside regional competitors as a destination of increasing international appeal.

Government officials view the tourism sector as a critical engine for sustained economic growth and employment generation. The resolution emphasizes quality over volume, with particular focus on higher-value tourism experiences that can maximize revenue per visitor while supporting sustainable development across regions. Priority initiatives include infrastructure upgrades, human resource development, and promotion of Vietnam's cultural and natural attractions to premium market segments.

Implementation of the strategy involves coordination across multiple ministries and provincial authorities to ensure consistent standards and service delivery. Industry experts anticipate the targets will require substantial investment in hospitality capacity, digital infrastructure, and workforce training programs across the country.
