Vietnam tightens import rules on used electronics from 2027
Vietnam will enforce stricter regulations on imported used and refurbished electronics starting January 1, 2027, extending its ban to include secondhand smartphones, computers and other digital devices. The move is part of the country's updated list of prohibited goods aimed at managing electronic waste and protecting domestic markets.

Vietnam's government has updated its import restrictions to comprehensively ban used and refurbished electronic devices, with new regulations taking effect on the first day of 2027. The expanded prohibition covers a wide range of secondhand digital products, including smartphones, personal computers, and numerous other consumer electronics.
The measure represents a significant tightening of Vietnam's trade policy regarding electronic goods. Previously, controls on used device imports were less comprehensive, but the updated list reflects growing concerns about electronic waste management and the influx of substandard refurbished products into Southeast Asian markets.
The ban aligns with Vietnam's broader environmental protection goals and efforts to strengthen its domestic electronics industry. By restricting the import of used devices, authorities aim to reduce the volume of electronic waste entering the country and encourage consumers to purchase new or officially refurbished products through regulated channels.
Businesses and importers will have until the end of 2026 to adjust their operations and supply chains in compliance with the new regulations. The enforcement comes as Vietnam continues to balance economic development with environmental sustainability and consumer protection standards.
