Vietnamese community in Cambodia seeks greater role in bilateral development

The Vietnamese-origin community in Cambodia has emerged as an important bridge between the two countries, leveraging longstanding cultural and historical connections to advance mutual development goals. Community representatives have urged both Vietnamese and Cambodian authorities to provide greater institutional support that would enable them to play an expanded role in bilateral cooperation.

The advocacy effort coincides with intensified diplomatic engagement between Hanoi and Phnom Penh. Vietnamese Prime Minister Le Minh Hung is undertaking official visits to both Laos and Cambodia as part of efforts to consolidate the traditional friendship between Vietnam and Cambodia, according to statements from government officials.

Trade and economic cooperation feature prominently in the bilateral agenda. Officials from both nations have identified three key areas requiring focused attention to achieve a $20 billion target in Vietnam-Cambodia annual trade. The expansion of commercial ties is expected to create additional opportunities for the Vietnamese-origin community to contribute to Cambodia's broader development trajectory.

The Vietnamese-origin population has historically served as a cultural and economic connector between the two nations. Their deeper integration into Cambodia's development framework is seen as mutually beneficial, potentially accelerating progress in sectors ranging from trade and investment to education and cultural exchange.
