Prosecutors at a Hanoi court on November 4 formally requested a life sentence for Pho Duc Nam, the alleged mastermind behind a sprawling investment fraud scheme, on charges of fraudulent appropriation of property. Additional charges of money laundering drew a proposed sentence of 11-12 years, which would effectively result in a life term when combined with the primary conviction.
The case represents one of Vietnam's largest investment fraud prosecutions, with 188 individuals facing charges in total. The scheme is alleged to have defrauded investors of more than $160.4 million, authorities said.
Due to the scale of the investigation, proceedings are being conducted as a hybrid trial across three separate locations to manage the number of defendants and evidence involved. The multi-venue arrangement reflects the complexity of untangling financial flows and identifying the roles of numerous individuals accused of participating in the fraudulent network.
The first-instance trial represents a significant milestone in the prosecution's efforts to hold those responsible accountable and recover funds for affected investors. The court's handling of the case will be closely watched as Vietnam continues efforts to strengthen oversight of investment activities and protect consumers from financial fraud schemes.
