The Hanoi People's Court delivered its verdict on November 5 after four days of trial proceedings, concluding one of the country's significant corporate fraud cases. Chu Thi Thanh, known as a prominent figure in Vietnam's petroleum sector, was found guilty of embezzlement, illegal issuance and trading of invoices and documents for state budget payments, and large-scale tax evasion.
The case centered on irregularities at Thien Minh Duc Group JSC and related entities under Thanh's control. The court determined that the defendants engaged in systematic fraudulent practices designed to evade tax obligations and misappropriate state funds through falsified documentation schemes.
In addition to Thanh's sentence, the court imposed penalties on 22 co-defendants implicated in the scheme. The case highlights ongoing concerns about financial oversight and accountability within Vietnam's energy sector, where high-profile corporate malfeasance has prompted scrutiny of regulatory frameworks.
The sentencing underscores authorities' commitment to prosecuting major economic crimes. Vietnamese courts have intensified efforts to address embezzlement and tax evasion, particularly in strategically important industries such as petroleum and energy.
