The Vijayawada division of South Coast Railway has significantly bolstered its renewable energy infrastructure with the installation of 4,864 kWp of solar capacity, marking a substantial step toward sustainable operations across the division.
According to the Divisional Railway Manager, the solar installations have delivered impressive results during the April-July period of the current financial year. The systems have generated 19,90,741 units of electricity, contributing measurably to the division's energy requirements while reducing operational costs.
The financial impact has been noteworthy, with the division realizing savings of ₹1.85 crore through the solar generation during the four-month period. This cost reduction underscores the economic viability of renewable energy investments for India's railway network, which has been increasingly integrating green technologies across its vast operations.
The Vijayawada division's solar expansion reflects broader Indian Railways initiatives to enhance sustainability and reduce dependence on conventional power sources. As railways grapple with escalating energy costs, solar installations at divisional depots, workshops, and administrative facilities have emerged as a practical solution to manage expenses while supporting India's renewable energy targets.
The successful deployment of solar infrastructure in Vijayawada demonstrates the feasibility of scaling such projects across other railway divisions, potentially serving as a template for expanded green energy adoption within the national railway system.
