Vijayawada's towering eco-friendly Ganesh idol set for ceremonial dissolution

Vijayawada is set to bid farewell to an ambitious eco-conscious idol as the city's 72-foot Ganesh statue undergoes its final ritual on September 24. The towering figure, constructed entirely from clay, jute and coir materials, will be dissolved in situ at Sitara Grounds where it has stood throughout the Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations.

The ambitious project brought together approximately 200 artisans from across India to complete the idol within a compressed 60-day timeline. The use of biodegradable materials—clay sourced locally, jute fibre and coconut coir—reflects a growing emphasis on environmentally sustainable festival practices in urban India. Unlike traditional immersion ceremonies that require transporting idols to water bodies, this approach keeps the dissolution process contained and controlled at the installation site.

Fire tenders have been assigned the task of conducting the ceremonial dissolution, ensuring the process is carried out safely and systematically. The method demonstrates an alternative approach to managing Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations while minimizing environmental impact and addressing concerns about water body pollution from idol immersion practices.

The Vijayawada initiative highlights how Indian cities are adapting centuries-old festival traditions to align with contemporary environmental consciousness, allowing communities to maintain cultural observances without compromising ecological sustainability.
