Angry protesters in Pasighat, Arunachal Pradesh, set fire to the office of the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC) on Tuesday, marking a dramatic escalation in opposition to a proposed dam project. The violence also claimed several government structures, with reports indicating that at least one police station and seven to eight police vehicles were damaged in the flames.
The demonstrations reflect growing public discontent over the hydroelectric development, which has faced sustained local opposition. Beyond the NHPC facility, the homes of several state legislators were vandalized during the unrest, highlighting the intensity of feeling among residents who oppose the project.
The Pasighat office destruction represents one of the most visible acts of defiance by protesters, who have organized repeatedly against the dam initiative. Authorities have not yet released formal statements regarding the extent of damage or whether arrests have been made in connection with the incidents.
Hydroelectric projects in the northeastern states have frequently drawn opposition from local communities citing environmental concerns and impact on indigenous populations. The Pasighat unrest underscores the persistent friction between government development priorities and grassroots resistance in the region.
