Visionary conservationist's Maine park legacy spans two centuries

Percival P. Baxter, a former governor of Maine, initiated an ambitious land acquisition programme in 1930 that would fundamentally reshape conservation efforts in the northeastern United States. Beginning with nearly 6,000 acres surrounding Mount Katahdin, the state's highest peak, Baxter embarked on a personal mission to preserve the region's natural landscape from industrial development and unsustainable resource extraction.

Over more than three decades, Baxter methodically expanded his conservation holdings through strategic land purchases and acquisitions.
