The Commonwealth Heritage Skills Training Programme officially opened at the Oak Ray Hotel in Kandy on October 5, marking a collaborative initiative between India's Vellore Institute of Technology (VIT) and the University of Peradeniya. The programme, running through October 10, aims to enhance capacity in heritage conservation and management across the island.
The initiative brings together heritage management professionals, architects, engineers and other specialists from Sri Lanka for training in contemporary heritage preservation practices. The programme reflects growing regional cooperation in addressing challenges related to the conservation and sustainable management of cultural and architectural heritage sites.
The six-day format allows participants intensive engagement with expert practitioners and institutional knowledge from both India and Sri Lanka. The collaboration between VIT and the University of Peradeniya underscores the importance of academic partnerships in developing professional skills critical to heritage sector development in the region.
Heir heritage conservation efforts are increasingly significant as South Asian nations work to protect and manage their extensive architectural and cultural assets while balancing development and preservation priorities.
