Vizag community mobilises for eye donation awareness campaign

Visakhapatnam residents gathered for a community-focused rally designed to increase awareness about the importance of eye donation and its role in addressing India's corneal blindness crisis. The initiative brought together healthcare professionals, civil society organisations, and the general public to discuss the medical and social aspects of voluntary eye donation.

The rally underscored the significant gap between the demand for corneal transplants and the availability of donor eyes in the region. With thousands of people losing vision to corneal scarring and opacity annually, eye donation programmes remain crucial in restoring sight to otherwise untreatable cases of blindness.

Organisers emphasised that eye donation is a simple, non-invasive process that can be undertaken by individuals across age groups and health conditions. Eyes must be removed within four to six hours of death, making donor registration and family awareness essential components of successful transplantation programmes.

The campaign encouraged residents to register as eye donors and pledge their corneas posthumously. Participants were provided with information about registering with eye banks and local hospitals, aiming to create a sustainable pool of donors to meet the region's growing needs for corneal grafts.
