Volkswagen's supervisory board has approved a major reduction in its global workforce, marking an intensification of the company's restructuring efforts across its sprawling brand portfolio. The latest tranche of cuts will shed 50,000 jobs, adding to previously announced reductions as the group targets a total workforce decrease of 100,000 by the end of the decade.
The cuts span the group's four principal marques—Volkswagen, Audi, Porsche and Skoda—reflecting the scale of transformation underway at Europe's largest automaker. The reductions are expected to proceed through 2030 and represent one of the most significant workforce contractions in the company's history.
The approval signals management's determination to streamline operations amid mounting pressures from the global transition to electric vehicles and intensifying competition in battery technology. The company has positioned the cuts as essential to maintaining competitiveness while shifting capital toward electrification and software development.
Volkswagen has indicated that the reductions will be achieved partly through natural attrition and voluntary departure schemes where possible, though broader layoffs appear inevitable given the scale of the initiative. The group's German operations are expected to absorb a substantial portion of the cuts.
