Adityanath on Monday asserted that removing ineligible names illegally included in voter rolls is crucial for safeguarding India's security, unity and integrity. The chief minister characterized the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) as an important initiative to reinforce the country's longstanding democratic traditions.
The verification exercise aims to identify and expunge entries relating to deceased persons, those who have permanently relocated, and duplicate registrations from electoral rolls across the state. Adityanath emphasized that conducting such checks in accordance with established procedures is necessary for maintaining the integrity of the electoral system.
In his statement, Adityanath appealed to all citizens who have reached the age of 18 to ensure their names are included in the voter list. He called for collective participation in constructing "a clean, strong and transparent voter list," framing the exercise as a shared responsibility in India's democratic process.
The remarks come as the SIR exercise has drawn criticism from various quarters, with opponents raising concerns about the scale and implementation of the voter verification drive in the state.
