The Chief Electoral Officer's office in Uttar Pradesh has attributed a series of unusual errors in the voter list to glitches that occurred during the first-time online registration process, when English names were being translated into Hindi. Among 14 lakh voter entries processed, officials confirmed that 158 contained mistakes resulting from the automated translation process.
The errors came to light following public reports of inexplicable name variations appearing in the electoral roll. In one notable instance, a voter named Ramhit Yadav was recorded with a name that appeared to be a phonetic Hindi translation, creating confusion and raising questions about the registration system's quality control mechanisms.
The situation escalated in Pilibhit district, where authorities discovered irregularities across 10,470 voter entries. In response, the election commission directed action against two officials overseeing the process and terminated a computer operator responsible for data entry, signalling the seriousness with which officials are addressing the lapses.
The incident highlights challenges faced by election authorities in India as they transition to digital voter registration systems, particularly when managing language conversions across multiple scripts and transliteration standards. Officials have initiated a broader review of the affected entries to prevent similar errors in future electoral processes.
