Piyushbhai Desai, the chairman of Wagh Bakri Tea Group who steered the company from its Gujarat base to national prominence, has passed away. The business leader was 86.

Desai died on September 15, according to a statement issued by Wagh Bakri Tea Group. Over six decades in the tea trade, he established himself as a respected entrepreneur and expert taster, transforming the regional brand into a pan-Indian presence across multiple states.
Known for his commitment to quality, integrity and long-term business relationships, Desai built Wagh Bakri on principles of collective growth and ethical commerce. His business philosophy was shaped by Gandhian ideals, influenced by his grandfather's historical meeting with Mahatma Gandhi in South Africa.
Sudarshan Iyengar, former vice chancellor of Gujarat Vidyapith, recalled Desai as an entirely self-made entrepreneur who embodied Gandhi's vision. Beyond business, Desai was recognised for his philanthropic work and approach to social responsibility throughout his career.
Desai's legacy extends beyond the tea industry, marking him as a notable figure in Indian business who demonstrated that commercial success and ethical values need not be mutually exclusive.
