Warning lights no excuse for unsafe driving, police warn
Malaysian police have clarified that emergency vehicles are not exempt from basic road safety rules, even when operating under official duties. The reminder comes as authorities seek to reduce traffic violations among official vehicle operators.

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 20 — Police have reiterated that vehicles displaying warning lights must still adhere to fundamental safe driving practices and remain alert on the road, contrary to some drivers' assumptions.
While emergency and official vehicles are permitted to use warning lights to facilitate their movement, this authority does not grant them blanket exemption from traffic regulations or the responsibility to drive safely, according to a police statement issued today.
"The activation of warning lights is intended to alert other road users and request passage, not to override traffic laws or justify reckless driving," police said. Officers emphasised that drivers of official vehicles remain obligated to exercise caution, maintain appropriate speeds, and take defensive driving measures.
The clarification addresses concerns that some operators of emergency and government vehicles have been flouting basic safety protocols while using warning lights. Police indicated that violations by official vehicle drivers will continue to be monitored and actioned accordingly.
The statement forms part of ongoing efforts by authorities to improve road safety standards across Malaysia and ensure accountability among all vehicle operators, regardless of their official status.
