Water quality crisis deepens across 93 Haryana blocks since 2022
A Congress legislator has flagged severe deterioration in groundwater standards across nearly a third of Haryana's administrative blocks over the past three years. Southern districts including Palwal and Nuh have emerged as particularly affected regions, with total dissolved solids reaching dangerously elevated levels.

Water quality metrics have worsened significantly across 93 blocks in Haryana, according to observations by a Congress MLA, highlighting an expanding public health concern in the state. The deterioration, documented since 2022, reflects rising concentrations of total dissolved solids (TDS)—a key indicator of water potability and safety.
Palwal district has experienced among the most acute changes, with average TDS levels surging 74 percent over three years, climbing from 940 milligrams per litre to 1,636 mg/L. In Nuh district, the Indri block has recorded even more alarming readings, with TDS measurements reaching 1,974 mg/L—nearly double the levels recorded in 2022.
These elevated TDS concentrations indicate high mineral content and salinity in groundwater sources, rendering water unsuitable for drinking and irrigation without treatment. Prolonged consumption of such water poses health risks including gastrointestinal issues and mineral imbalances.
The widespread deterioration across nearly 30 percent of Haryana's blocks underscores systemic challenges in groundwater management and conservation. State officials have not yet issued a comprehensive response to the findings, though the data suggests urgent intervention may be required to address contamination sources and implement remedial measures across affected regions.
