Water utility warns of fake bill update scams via phone and messaging apps

The Hydraulic and Municipal Water Supply and Sewage Board has issued a cautionary advisory against a growing wave of fraudulent communications targeting its customers. The utility said criminals are impersonating the board through unsolicited phone calls, text messages, and WhatsApp communications, falsely claiming to relate to water bill updates and account information.

The board urged consumers to exercise caution when receiving such communications, particularly those requesting personal information, account details, or directing users to click suspicious links or download applications. Scammers typically use these tactics to extract sensitive data or financial information from unsuspecting victims.

Consumers are advised to contact the water board directly through official channels if they have concerns about their bills or account status. The board emphasized that it does not request personal or banking details through unsolicited calls or messages, and urged the public to report any suspicious communications to both the utility and relevant law enforcement authorities.

The advisory comes as digital fraud cases have increased across South Asia, with cybercriminals frequently targeting essential service customers through impersonation schemes. Water board officials recommitted to safeguarding customer information and encouraged vigilance among users of telecommunications and messaging platforms.
