Wawasan, a recently established party aligned with the Perikatan Nasional coalition, is being positioned to attract non-Malay voters in a strategic bid to strengthen the coalition's electoral base. According to Wan Fayhsal, party leaders recognize that the predominantly Malay-Muslim composition of existing coalition partners, particularly PAS, has limited their appeal among other communities.
The initiative represents an explicit acknowledgment within PN circles that sustained political viability requires broader multiracial support. Senior figures, including PAS leadership, have reportedly recognized the necessity of establishing a more inclusive political vehicle within the coalition framework.
Wawasan's role signals an attempt to address a longstanding weakness in PN's electoral architecture. While the coalition has made gains in recent years, particularly among Malay-Muslim voters, it has struggled to make significant inroads with Chinese, Indian, and other non-Malay communities—a demographic challenge that has constrained its overall electoral ceiling.
The party's formation underscores intensifying competition for votes ahead of future electoral contests, with coalition strategists believing that dedicated outreach through a multiracial party structure offers better prospects than relying solely on existing coalition components. Whether the new party can overcome ingrained voter preferences and distrust of PN among non-Malay communities remains to be tested.
