Wawrinka fell to Berrettini 7-6(4), 7-6(3), 6-0 in his farewell appearance at Flushing Meadows, bringing to a close a decorated career that included three Grand Slam titles. The Swiss champion's last major victory came at the 2014 US Open, when he defeated Novak Djokovic in the final at the same venue a decade ago.
The match followed a familiar pattern to the players' recent Wimbledon encounter, with Berrettini claiming both opening sets via tiebreaker. However, the Italian pulled away decisively in the third set after breaking Wawrinka's serve at the start, despite the veteran winning a crucial point following video review.
Wawrinka made his 18th appearance at the US Open, having initially been uncertain whether he would receive the opportunity for a final farewell.
