Wayanad set to become India's first e-waste-free district by November

Wayanad district in Kerala is making a concerted push to achieve a landmark environmental milestone, aiming to become the country's first e-waste-free district by November 1. The initiative represents a significant step toward sustainable waste management practices in India's growing electronics disposal challenge.

The first phase of the collection drive has already yielded encouraging results, with authorities recovering 31 tonnes of electronic waste from government offices across the district. The successful haul from public institutions has demonstrated the feasibility of the broader programme, officials said.

Agriculture Minister T. Siddique emphasized that achieving the ambitious target will require collective action beyond government facilities. "The success of this initiative depends on the active participation of every household and private establishment in the district," Siddique stated, underlining the need for a community-wide commitment to e-waste management.

The distinction of becoming India's first e-waste-free district would position Wayanad as a model for environmental stewardship and sustainable development practices. The effort aligns with growing concerns about the environmental and health hazards posed by improperly managed electronic waste, which contains toxic materials and valuable recoverable resources.

District authorities are expected to intensify awareness campaigns and collection drives in the coming weeks to ensure households and businesses participate in the initiative before the November deadline.
