Weakening Harapan-BN alliance could strengthen accountability, analyst says

Cooling relations between Pakatan Harapan and Barisan Nasional present an unexpected benefit for Malaysian governance, according to political observer Wong, who argues that heightened rivalry between the two major coalitions could strengthen parliamentary accountability.

Wong contends that intensified competition would force both sides to pursue greater transparency and expose alleged misconduct more aggressively. "When coalitions compete fiercely, they become motivated to investigate and publicise each other's alleged failures," the analyst observed, suggesting this dynamic could lead to stronger institutional checks on power.

The fraying alliance could also accelerate the establishment of an independent royal commission of inquiry into corporate wrongdoing, Wong added. The analyst believes increasing political pressure from both blocs vying for public trust would make such measures more difficult for either side to resist or delay.

Malaysia's political landscape has grown increasingly fragmented in recent years, with shifting coalitions and changing alliances reshaping parliamentary dynamics.
