Weligama PS budget rejected for second time as council votes split

The Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha's proposed 2027 budget was rejected yesterday during a special council meeting, marking the second defeat for the financial plan. The meeting was chaired by Attorney-at-Law Chinthaka Hewapathirana of the ruling National People's Power (NPP).

During the vote, the NPP-led administration secured 22 votes in support of the budget proposal. However, the figure fell short of the threshold required for approval, resulting in the budget's rejection.

This represents the second consecutive setback for the local authority's budget approval process. The defeat highlights ongoing divisions within the council and raises questions about the administration's ability to advance its fiscal agenda.

The Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha will be required to revisit the budget proposal and address the concerns that led to its rejection. Local authorities typically face significant operational challenges when budgets remain unapproved, potentially affecting service delivery and developmental initiatives.

The path forward for the local authority's financial planning remains unclear as stakeholders seek to resolve the budgetary impasse.
