Welsh explorer Ash Dykes loses satellite contact during Congo Basin expedition

Ash Dykes, a 35-year-old explorer from Wales, experienced a significant communications breakdown while traversing the Congo Basin between Nola in the Central African Republic and Mossaka in the Republic of Congo. His support team reported losing all contact with the adventurer for over 16 hours, raising concerns about his safety in the challenging terrain.

The communication failure occurred when multiple systems failed simultaneously during the expedition. Dykes' Starlink connection went down, and his power bank depleted, leaving him unable to transmit updates through conventional means. The loss of contact prompted worry among team members monitoring the remote journey.

Communications were eventually restored when Dykes' team re-established a link through a Garmin satellite device, an alternative system designed for expeditions in areas with no cellular coverage. However, the satellite connection has proven limited in bandwidth, restricting the frequency and detail of updates that can be transmitted from the field.

Dykes continues his expedition through one of Africa's most isolated regions, where challenging geography and lack of infrastructure pose ongoing obstacles to maintaining reliable communications. The expedition highlights the difficulties faced by explorers undertaking extended journeys through remote and undeveloped territories.
