Senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader Suvendu Adhikari has announced ambitious plans to introduce a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) and anti-conversion laws in West Bengal within six months of the party assuming office in the state. Speaking on the party's legislative agenda, Adhikari said West Bengal would follow the implementation models adopted by the BJP-governed states of Uttarakhand and Gujarat.
The UCC aims to replace personal laws governing matters such as marriage, inheritance, and succession with a common civil code applicable to all citizens regardless of religion. Several BJP-ruled states have already enacted or proposed similar legislation, framing it as essential for gender equality and national integration. Anti-conversion laws, formally known as freedom of religion acts, restrict religious conversions and are contentious in states with significant minority populations.
The announcement reflects the BJP's broader push to advance cultural nationalist policies across states it governs or seeks to govern. West Bengal, ruled by the Trinamool Congress since 2011, remains a contested political arena between the two parties. The proposed legislation is likely to intensify political debate in the state, given its diverse religious demography and the contentious nature of such laws among civil rights groups.
Adhikari's timeline suggests the BJP views these measures as central to its governance platform should it gain power in the state. Implementation would require legislative action and could face legal challenges, as similar laws in other states have attracted court scrutiny and opposition from various civil society organizations.
