West Bengal BJP names party legislators as college governing body heads

West Bengal's Higher Education Department has made a series of appointments placing BJP party members in leadership positions within college governing bodies across the state. The positions of president in various college councils have been assigned to legislators and Members of Parliament affiliated with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

When questioned about the pattern of appointments, State Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay dismissed concerns about impropriety. The minister emphasized that the selection process followed established protocols and that all appointees possess the necessary credentials for their roles.

"There is nothing unusual in these appointments," Chattopadhyay stated, underlining that the chosen individuals meet the minimum educational requirements for the positions. He noted that those appointed as presidents of college governing bodies hold at least bachelor's degrees, fulfilling the statutory prerequisites.

The appointments come as West Bengal's education sector continues to see increased government engagement in institutional leadership structures.
