West Bengal FM seeks repeal of Urban Land Ceiling Act to boost investment

West Bengal's Finance Minister Swapan Dasgupta has urged the removal of the Urban Land Ceiling Act, arguing that archaic land laws continue to impede the state's economic development and infrastructure growth. Speaking to real estate stakeholders, Dasgupta emphasised the need to create a more conducive regulatory environment to attract organised players in the property sector.

Dasgupta highlighted that rigid tenancy regulations and land-related legislation are deterring institutional investors from committing resources to West Bengal's real estate market. The minister stressed that modernising these laws would unlock significant investment potential in urban development across the state.

The appeal comes as West Bengal seeks to position itself as a competitive investment destination in eastern India. By addressing structural impediments in the land sector, the state aims to facilitate residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects that could drive job creation and economic expansion.

The Urban Land Ceiling Act, enacted decades ago to prevent land hoarding, remains in force in limited areas but continues to influence investor sentiment. Dasgupta's call reflects broader efforts by the state government to reform legacy policies that no longer serve contemporary development objectives.
