West Bengal seeks ECI guidance on voter re-enrolment amid tribunal cases

The Chief Electoral Officer of West Bengal has raised concerns about the procedural status of voters caught in ongoing tribunal proceedings, seeking specific guidance from the Election Commission of India on how to handle their re-enrolment applications.

During a recent meeting with state electoral officers, the ECI directed all Chief Electoral Officers to expedite special voter enrolment drives across their jurisdictions. The commission has asked officials to conduct these drives on an accelerated timeline, employing multiple strategies to maximize voter registration.

The ECI's directive stipulates that states should establish temporary enrolment camps as the primary mechanism for registering new voters and processing re-enrolment applications. Following the camps, Booth Level Officers have been tasked with conducting door-to-door visits to reach voters who may have been unable to attend the designated enrolment centers.

The West Bengal CEO's query underscores operational challenges faced by election authorities in managing voter rolls, particularly when legal proceedings complicate administrative decisions. The clarification sought is expected to provide a standardized approach for handling such cases across all states undertaking special enrolment drives.

The ECI's push for rapid enrolment comes as part of efforts to ensure comprehensive and updated electoral rolls ahead of forthcoming elections, with the special drives targeting previously unregistered or inadequately documented voters.
