West Bengal authorities have announced stringent enforcement measures to ensure compliance with firecracker regulations during the upcoming Diwali and Chhath celebrations. The state's Director General of Police has cautioned residents and traders against breaching established norms governing the sale, storage, and use of firecrackers during the festive period.
A key provision of the directive prohibits the use of sky lanterns without formal permission from the fire department. Citizens wishing to deploy sky lanterns for celebrations must obtain prior clearance from the department, officials said. The restriction aims to prevent potential fire hazards and safety risks posed by unmanned aerial devices.
The warning comes as the state prepares for the dual celebrations of Diwali and Chhath, both major festivals observed by large sections of West Bengal's population. The crackdown covers both retail sales and individual use, with authorities emphasizing that traders must adhere to storage limits and licensing requirements.
The government has signaled its commitment to balancing festive traditions with public safety and environmental concerns. Violators face strict action under relevant provisions of law, officials cautioned, urging residents to celebrate responsibly and within prescribed guidelines.
