The West Bengal government plans to institute the 'Seema Mitra' award starting 2027 to honour personnel from the Border Security Force, Sashastra Seema Bal, and state police who serve in border areas, announced a senior state official during a visit to a frontier outpost.
The announcement was made while addressing BSF personnel stationed at a border post in Hingalganj, North 24 Parganas district, which adjoins Bangladesh. The new award aims to recognise the dedication and service of security personnel deployed in challenging border regions.
According to the proposal, a selection committee will be constituted to evaluate and decide upon the awardees based on their contributions to border security and public service. The committee's composition and selection criteria are expected to be finalised in the coming months.
The initiative reflects the state government's commitment to acknowledging the work of security forces stationed along the sensitive Indo-Bangladesh border. North 24 Parganas is one of the key districts where BSF and state police maintain a significant presence to ensure border security and prevent smuggling and illegal cross-border activities.
