West Bengal to teach Syama Prasad Mookerjee, removes Singur from curriculum

The West Bengal government is set to revamp its school curriculum with a renewed emphasis on state history and prominent regional figures, according to education department officials. The revised syllabus will include comprehensive coverage of Syama Prasad Mookerjee, the influential Hindu nationalist leader and co-founder of the Bharatiya Jana Sangh, while removing the Singur chapter currently taught in schools.

The decision reflects the state's effort to prioritize local historical narratives and personalities in its educational framework. Syama Prasad Mookerjee, a significant figure in Bengal's political history, is expected to feature prominently in the restructured curriculum as part of this initiative to strengthen students' understanding of regional heritage.

The Singur chapter, which focuses on the contentious land acquisition issue that dominated Bengal politics in the 2000s, will be excluded from the new syllabus. This marks a significant shift in how the state's educational system presents recent political history to its students.

Education department representatives indicated that the curriculum changes aim to provide students with a more comprehensive understanding of Bengal's cultural and political landscape. The revised textbooks are expected to be implemented in schools across the state following formal approval of the new syllabus.
