West Indies must dominate powerplay to upset India in T20 series

West Indies head coach Darren Sammy has identified the powerplay as the crucial phase in the ongoing T20 International series against India, pointing to early-overs bowling lapses as the primary reason his team trails 2-1 in the five-match contest.

West Indies must dominate powerplay to upset India in T20 series

With the fourth T20 International scheduled for Wednesday, Sammy emphasized that controlling the first six overs with the ball has become the defining factor in the series. India have capitalized on powerplay opportunities, scoring nearly 14.5 runs per over during the initial phase, while West Indies have conceded expensive starts in each match.

"For us, it is about controlling the powerplay. So far, we have had to pull the game back every single time. That is an area we need to work on," Sammy told reporters on Tuesday.

Despite restricting India's scoring rate to below 10 runs per over across the remaining three phases of their innings, West Indies have found themselves chasing the game from the outset. Sammy acknowledged that strong powerplay performances could have altered the series narrative entirely. "The powerplay was the difference that prevented us from going 2-1 up, because we could have been 2-1 up as well," he said.

The West Indies coach also backed experienced all-rounder Roston Chase, whose selection has drawn scrutiny. As the team prepares for the crucial fourth match, tightening their powerplay execution with the ball remains the priority for a potential series turnaround.
