Western Visayas inflation surges to 8.4% in August

ILOILO CITY — Inflation in the Western Visayas region accelerated to 8.4 percent in August, according to data released by the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), signaling intensifying cost pressures across the region's economy.

The month-on-month increase from July's 7.8 percent rate reflects broad-based price growth across multiple sectors. Housing and utility expenses emerged as major contributors to the inflation surge, alongside elevated transportation and food costs that continue to weigh on household budgets across the region.

The August reading represents a sharp reversal from deflationary conditions recorded earlier in the year, when the region experienced a 0.3 percent deflation. The resurgence in price growth underscores mounting inflationary pressures that have characterized the Philippine economy in recent months.

The Western Visayas, encompassing major population centers including Iloilo, remains a key barometer of price trends in the Visayas region and reflects broader economic conditions affecting consumers and businesses throughout the area.
