Westports to double container capacity as Port Klang expands

Westports Malaysia is set to significantly boost its operational capacity as part of a major expansion initiative at Port Klang, the country's busiest seaport. The expansion will double the terminal's annual container handling capacity to 28 million twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), positioning the facility to meet rising demand from regional and global shipping lines.

The capacity increase forms part of a broader modernisation strategy for Port Klang, which has emerged as a critical hub for Southeast Asian container traffic. The expansion reflects Malaysia's growing importance in regional maritime trade networks and the port's role in serving major shipping routes connecting Asia, the Middle East, and Europe.

In addition to the existing capacity upgrades, plans are advancing for a third container terminal at Pulau Carey within the Port Klang zone. This new facility is intended to further enhance the port's ability to accommodate larger vessels and higher cargo volumes, addressing capacity constraints that have intensified with increased containerised trade throughout the region.

The development initiative underscores Malaysia's commitment to maintaining competitive port infrastructure amid rising regional competition. Port Klang currently serves as the primary gateway for container traffic across Malaysia and has established itself as a transhipment hub for ASEAN economies.
