WhatsApp has deepened its financial services offerings in India by introducing a bill payments feature that allows users to settle utility and other bills directly through the app. The new service, powered by the Bharat Connect infrastructure, connects users with 22,722 billers spanning 30 different payment categories.
The feature integrates multiple payment methods to provide flexibility for users. Transactions can be completed through the Unified Payments Interface (UPI), as well as credit and debit cards, accommodating the diverse payment preferences of India's digital payment users.
The move reflects WhatsApp's growing ambitions in the fintech sector within India's digital economy. The platform has previously ventured into financial services, including peer-to-peer payments and merchant transactions, as it seeks to expand beyond messaging.
With the bill payments feature now live, WhatsApp aims to tap into India's expanding digital payments ecosystem. The addition of bill payments through Bharat Connect represents another step in the company's broader strategy to establish itself as a comprehensive financial services platform on the messaging app.
The expansion comes at a time when Indian consumers increasingly prefer conducting financial transactions through their preferred messaging and social platforms, making such features attractive to a broad user base across the country.
