WhatsApp Introduces Parental Control Features for Teen Users

WhatsApp has rolled out parental control features designed to give parents greater oversight of their teenagers' activity on the messaging platform. The new tools allow guardians to set restrictions on how their children interact with contacts, manage group participation, and control access to certain functions.

The parental supervision feature enables parents to view which contacts their teens are communicating with and monitor group memberships without accessing the actual content of messages. Parents can also set limits on who can add their children to groups and manage notification settings to control when their teens receive alerts.

The controls are accessible through linked parent and teen accounts, allowing guardians to establish boundaries while respecting user privacy. The feature does not grant parents access to message contents, maintaining end-to-end encryption that WhatsApp has championed as a core privacy protection.

The move comes as messaging platforms face mounting pressure from regulators and child safety advocates across India and Southeast Asia to implement stronger protections for young users. WhatsApp's parental control initiative represents the company's response to concerns about online safety, cyberbullying, and inappropriate contact with minors.

The feature is being rolled out gradually across regions and will be available on both iOS and Android platforms. Users can manage the settings through their account preferences once the feature becomes available in their region.
