WhatsApp rolls out enhanced security features for Indian users

WhatsApp is deploying three significant account security upgrades designed to provide users with stronger protection against unauthorized access and fraudulent contacts. The rollout includes a password-based two-step verification system, expanded caller identification details, and support for multiple passkeys—offering users greater flexibility in account authentication methods.

The enhanced two-step verification system will require users to set a password that must be entered alongside their standard authentication process. This additional layer of security is intended to prevent account takeovers, a growing concern among messaging app users across India and the broader region. The feature addresses vulnerabilities that could allow bad actors to gain access through SIM card swaps or compromised verification codes.

The platform is also introducing more detailed information about unknown callers, helping users make informed decisions before accepting calls from unfamiliar numbers. This enhancement aims to reduce the impact of spam and scam calls that have become increasingly prevalent. Users will receive additional context about incoming calls, enabling them to identify potentially malicious contacts.

The multi-passkey support enables users to register multiple authentication methods for their accounts, reducing dependence on a single verification method. This flexibility allows users to maintain account access even if one passkey becomes unavailable, while maintaining security standards. The updates are being rolled out gradually across WhatsApp's user base.
