White House renames Strait of Hormuz to 'Trump Strait'

The White House has officially renamed the Strait of Hormuz to the 'Trump Strait,' acting on a proposal made by President Donald Trump. The strategic waterway, which connects the Persian Gulf to the Gulf of Oman and serves as a critical passage for global oil shipments, will henceforth be referred to by the new designation in all official U.S. government communications and materials.

The renaming represents the latest in a series of geographical rebranding efforts pursued by the Trump administration. Last week, the president ordered that Lake Ontario, which straddles the U.S.-Canada border, be renamed 'Lake America.' That decision came amid escalating trade tensions between Washington and Ottawa.

The Strait of Hormuz is one of the world's most strategically important maritime chokepoints, with roughly one-fifth of global petroleum passing through its waters annually. The waterway has long been a focal point of geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly regarding U.S.-Iran relations and regional security concerns.

The renaming has not yet been formally recognized by international maritime authorities or other nations. The International Hydrographic Organization, which typically oversees official designations of waterways and geographical features, has not commented on the U.S. initiative. Most countries and international bodies continue to refer to the passage by its traditional name.
