WHO calls for urgent funding boost to combat DRC Ebola crisis

The World Health Organization has intensified calls for greater financial support to tackle the Ebola epidemic ravaging the Democratic Republic of Congo, cautioning that current resources are insufficient to meet the scale of the public health emergency.

The UN health agency has already dispatched 320 tonnes of medical and humanitarian supplies to affected regions, demonstrating its commitment to the response. However, WHO leadership stressed that these efforts represent only an initial phase, and substantially more funding is required to expand vaccination campaigns, strengthen surveillance systems, and provide treatment infrastructure across affected areas.

The DRC has battled repeated Ebola outbreaks in recent years, with each incident posing significant challenges due to insecurity, limited healthcare infrastructure, and geographic barriers in remote regions. The current outbreak underscores the vulnerability of the region to viral hemorrhagic diseases and the critical importance of sustained international support.

WHO officials emphasized that delays in securing additional funding could hinder efforts to contain the virus and prevent further spread across borders in the volatile Central African region. The organization has appealed to donor nations and international financial institutions to rapidly commit resources needed for an expanded response programme.

The call for increased support reflects a broader pattern of underfunded global health emergencies, where initial crisis response often outpaces longer-term commitments needed to achieve sustained disease control and prevention.
