WHO Seeks Clarity on Russian Lab Worker's Unexpected Death
The World Health Organisation has launched an investigation into the death of a laboratory worker at a Russian research facility specialising in plague and other infectious diseases. Initial reports suggest pneumonic plague may be involved, though Russian authorities have found no evidence of dangerous pathogens in extensive testing.

The United Nations health agency said on Saturday that the cause of death remains undetermined, even as preliminary, unconfirmed reports point to pneumonic plague—a severe respiratory infection that, while less common than bubonic plague, can spread rapidly from person to person.
Pneumonic plague causes a severe form of pneumonia and can be fatal if left untreated, though recovery rates are high when the condition is diagnosed and treated promptly. The worker was employed at a Russian laboratory that conducts research on plague and other dangerous pathogens.
Russian health authorities have conducted more than 5,500 tests on samples related to the case and reported finding no evidence of dangerous microorganisms. However, the WHO said in its first comprehensive Disease Outbreak News statement on the matter that additional investigation is essential.
"Additional clinical, epidemiological and laboratory information, including confirmation of the diagnosis in the deceased laboratory worker, is required to improve confidence in the assessment," the WHO stated, calling for continued cooperation between international health bodies and Russian officials to clarify the circumstances surrounding the death.
