WHO urges BRICS nations to strengthen health systems ahead of crises

The WHO leadership has made a strong case to BRICS nations for proactively strengthening their health systems before the next major health emergency strikes. Speaking to representatives from Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa, WHO officials stressed that the window to build resilience must not be squandered as the immediate threat from recent crises fades from public consciousness.

The health organization highlighted four critical areas requiring urgent attention: developing robust health infrastructure, fostering innovation in medical technology and pandemic preparedness, establishing stronger mechanisms for cross-border health cooperation, and creating sustainable financing frameworks that do not depend on crisis-driven funding.

India, as a key member of the BRICS grouping and a major player in global health initiatives, has particular stakes in strengthening regional health resilience. The emphasis on sustainable financing is especially significant for developing economies that have struggled to maintain adequate health budgets while managing competing development priorities.

The WHO's message reflects lessons learned from recent pandemic responses, where nations that had invested in preparedness fared better than those caught unprepared. The organization views the BRICS bloc as pivotal to reshaping how emerging economies approach health security, particularly given their combined population and economic influence in shaping global health policies and practices.
