Widespread showers forecast across Sri Lanka with heavy falls expected

Showers and thundershowers are expected to develop at multiple locations across most of the island from 1.00 p.m. onwards on Thursday, the Department of Meteorology has advised.

Fairly heavy rainfall above 75 millimetres is likely to occur in several areas, particularly across the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central, Uva, North-western, Southern and North-central provinces. The department did not specify the duration of the expected weather system.

The alert comes as the monsoon transition period continues to bring variable weather patterns to the island. Residents in affected areas are advised to exercise caution, particularly in regions prone to flooding and landslides.

The public has been urged to remain alert to weather warnings and take necessary precautions ahead of the anticipated rainfall.
